Movie and Sundaes - January 29 5pm

Make your own ice cream sundae and enjoy the hit movie Whip It, featuring Ellen Page and Drew Barrymore. The film is rated PG-13, you MUST be 13 or over to attend this program. Sign-up is required, the program is free.

CR@SH - January 8th

Our first CR@SH of the New Year will feature DJ HERO ON THE BIG SCREEN! Plus some very special surprises to keep you entertained. If DJ Hero isn't your thing, we'll have plenty of other video games to play, or bring your own games. Just make sure they are not rated M. The library is not responsible for your stuff, so make sure you keep tabs on it. We'll have lots of snacks too. For teens in grades 7-12. Free, no sign-up required!!!

This month we will feature the game Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games for Wii on the big screen. Feel free to bring your system and your extra controllers, or just use ours. Please make sure games are not rated M, please, and be willing to share with the group. Teens in grades 7-12 are welcome to join in the fun!

There will be no CR@SH in December so make sure to come on down on Friday, November 13th. See you again in January!!

Book Review - Messed Up by Janet Nichols Lynch

R.D. is a a teacher's worst nightmare. He is repeating the eighth grade. On the very first day of school, he winds up in the principal's office, after trying to break up a fight between two girls in rival gangs. Of course, no one believes that R.D. was doing the RIGHT thing for once, and he is suspended. R.D. has had it rough, so it's easy to understand why he is having such a hard time in school. His mother had him when she was just a kid, and now she is serving out a sentence in a California prison. He lives with his grandmother and her boyfriend Earl. That is, until his grandma decides to dump old Earl and hops in the cab of her new boyfriend's truck, leaving R.D. behind. R.D. is happy to stay with Earl, but can't help feeling abandoned. And one afternoon, R.D. comes home to find Earl dead, and he must decided what to do. He knows that he will be sent to live in a foster home if anyone finds out he is home alone. He is terrified, and must make some very difficult decisions about his future.

R.D. is a wonderful character, full of humor and heart. He stumbles and struggles, and makes some poor choices, but through it all he remains true to himself. I hope this author continues to write more stories like this!

Book Review - Purple Heart by Patricia McCormick

If you have read any of Patricia McCormick's other books, like Cut or Sold, you know that she is a fantastic writer that tackles difficult topics. Purple Heart is no different. The story is about a young man named Matt who is stationed in Iraq when he is seriously injured during a mission. He is in a military hospital, trying to figure out what happened to him, and freaking out that he will be forever damaged by his traumatic brain injury. He is haunted by dreams of a young Iraqi boy named Ali, who often played soccer near where Matt's unit patrolled, and Matt can't shake the feeling that he was in some way responsible for his death. Above all else, Matt wants to be back fighting for his country with his boys, and it is loyalty to his friends that is most striking in this story. Matt's story gives us a brief glimpse into the messy and painful consequences of war.

Celebrate Teen Read Week

Read beyond reality @ your library!
Teen Read Week is celebrated every year, and it's time to read for the fun of it! This year's theme is Read Beyond Reality, and you are encouraged to read all sorts of great books that are out of this world. Fantasy, horror, sci-fi, and more.

Get ready to start the celebration at our Open House, Sunday October 4th from 1-5. We will be raffling off a prize package that includes three great books and one DVD, all with the "out of this world" theme. All you have to do to win is come on down to the library, vote for your favorite book of 2008 and you will be entered to win. Westbury and Carle Place teens in grades 7-12 are eligible. There will be also be fun events and entertainment for the whole family all day long.

Day of the Dead - Decorate a Sugar Skull

Decorate skulls made from sugar in celebration of the Mexican holiday, Dia de los Muertos, The Day of the Dead. No, you cannot eat the sugar skull. It wouldn't taste very good, trust me. That is why we will have lots of other tasty treats for you to enjoy! Free, please sign up at the front desk.

Book Review - The Treasure Map of Boys : Noel, Jackson, Finn, Hutch, Gideon--and Me, Ruby Oliver by E. Lockhart

This is the third book in the Ruby Oliver series, and if you enjoyed the other two books, you will love this as well. In the latest installment, Ruby is still dealing with being ostracized by her old group of friends for her rumored promiscuous behavior with a number of boys in her private school, Tate Prep. Luckily, she has Megan and Nora by her side. That is until Nora starts making it clear that she has a crush on Noel, and Ruby can't keep from flirting with him. In addition to the number of boys that seem to constantly cause her blood pressure to rise, Ruby is also facing the challenge of running a school bake sale, trying to keep a job, and handling a very large and very messy Great Dane.

The thing that I love about the Ruby Oliver books is that they really capture what it is like to be a boy crazy teenager. One day Ruby likes Noel, one day she likes Jackson, she can't figure out if Finn likes her...it may seem trivial to adults, but to Ruby (and the reader) it is all very serious stuff. I especially liked how E. Lockhart handles Ruby's relationship with her girl friends, and how things change when boys come into the picture.

Bonus points for an awesome cover, and lots of descriptions of delicious deserts throughout the book that had me craving something sweet the whole time I was reading!

The Return of the Teen Zone!

I know you have been missing us all summer long, but don't worry, the Teen Zone will be back this September. Make sure to stop by the library after school on September 8th and say hello! We will resume our normal hours, 2:15-4:30, every day school is in session. Laptops, games and a relaxing atmosphere for you to unwind after a long day in class. The Teen Zone is open to all teens in grades 7-12. Bring your library card!

Book Review - Need by Carrie Jones

Zara White is devastated after the death of her stepfather. She can’t seem to function. His death was unexpected and she was there. It happened right after he saw a man outside of their kitchen window. Her mother sends her to Maine to stay with her grandmother. She is hoping that the change will help Zara get back to normal.

Zara is not going to be able to be normal. She saw the same man from Charleston in Maine. He is following her. She doesn’t know what to do. To make matters worse, boys are disappearing from the sleepy Maine town. It has something to do with Zara and the man that she sees all over the place.

This book was a good read. If you liked Twilight, you will like this. There is romance, action, and suspense.

Summer Celebration!

Our end of the summer wrap up party will be held on Monday, August 17th at 3pm. If you completed the summer reading club requirements and read and reviewed three books, you can come to the party! Invitations are in the mail. If you don't get your invite, please contact me at the library. We will be raffling off our grand prize, a digital camera. Plus we will have lots of other prizes, and PIZZZZZZZZZZZZZA!
